Karan - Indian occupational and socially defined hierarchies

PEOPLE - karan chanana
Although India occupies only 2.4% of the world's land area, it supports over 15% of the world's population. Only China has a larger population. India's median age is 25, one of the youngest among large economies. About 70% live in more than 550,000 villages, and the remainder in more than 200 towns and cities. Over the thousands of years of its history, India has been invaded from the Iranian plateau, Central Asia, Arabia, Afghanistan, and the West; Indian people and culture have absorbed and modified these influences to produce a remarkable racial and cultural synthesis.

Religion, caste, and language are major determinants of social and political organization in India today. However, with more job opportunities in the private sector and better chances of upward social mobility, India has begun a quiet social transformation in this area. The government has recognized 18 official languages; Hindi, the national language, is the most widely spoken, although English is a national lingua franca. Although about 80% of its people are Hindu, India also is the home of more than 138 million Muslims--one of the world's largest Muslim populations. The population also includes Christians, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, and Parsis.

The Hindu caste system reflects Indian occupational and socially defined hierarchies. Ancient Sanskrit sources divide society into four major categories, priests (Brahmin), warriors (Kshatriya), traders/artisans (Vaishya) and farmers/laborers (Shudra). Although these categories are understood throughout India, they describe reality only in the most general terms. They omit, for example, the tribal people and those outside the caste system formerly known as "untouchables”, or dalits. In reality, Indian society is divided into thousands of jatis--local, endogamous groups based on occupation--and organized hierarchically according to complex ideas of purity and pollution. Discrimination based on caste is officially illegal, but remains prevalent, especially in rural areas. Nevertheless, the government has made strong efforts to minimize the importance of caste through active affirmative action and social policies. Moreover, caste is often diluted if not subsumed in the economically prosperous and heterogeneous cities, where an increasing percentage of India's population lives. In the countryside, expanding education, land reform and economic opportunity through access to information, communication, transport, and credit are helping to lessen the harshest elements of the caste system.

Karan Chanana - Journey in ITC

Karan journey in ITC:
A 'Times of India' article on how the IITians were moulding the landscape of technological revolution in Silicon Valley & redefining how people looked at India inspired me to concentrate harder on my favorite subjects- Mathematics & Physics and pursue Engineering at IIT Kgp. I was well on the trodden path of topping my Branch of study & pursuing higher education in a university in USA when I landed a Summer Internship at ITC. The next two months were an eye opener for me and I probably worked the hardest that I had till then in my life! I had been given a complex operational problem to solve and was expected to implement the solutions before I left. I got a tremendous high out of working in a large people system and by the time I had received a pre-placement offer from ITC, I was clear that this is what I wanted to do once I passed out.

Induction period at ITC was interesting not only because I built strong friendships with my peers & seniors during this stint but also because I got to work on open ended problems such as "Improving ITC's Retail distribution practices vis-a-vis its competitors.". It was during my Marketing stint that I observed firsthand the power of product quality in creating the Market standing of a product and was convinced that I wanted to contribute in this area. I spent the next two years in ITC's largest cigarette factory with a challenging variety-volume mix creating new systems & leading my team to affect significant improvements in product & process quality. I subsequently moved to ITC's Corporate Head Office & was involved in orchestrating the roll-out of Six Sigma & Lean management in my Division. This was a horizon widening stint not because of the complexity of the initiative I was involved in but also because of the opportunities I got here to influence policy at the apex level and engage in areas such as Talent management which are close to my heart. From here I moved back to Bangalore factory and I got my first experience of heading a large department. Leading a team of more than 600 associates towards operational excellence and making significant business impact was truly amazing. I also got the opportunity to conceptualise and roll-out an innovation process that has enabled the generation & implementation of more than 1000 innovation projects towards improvements in productivity, quality & market delivery in the last three years. After this stint I got to head the entire Production function in ITC's first cigarette factory. Energising a team of more than 1000 to achieve business outcomes they considered almost impossible, gave me huge satisfaction. I also got to play a key role in reorganisation of work processes in the Unit through an elaborate, complex but extremely interesting negotiation process with the Union team. This stint provided me with rich opportunities to engage in important people processes such as management development and helped me grow as a leader. From here, I moved to my current assignment of heading the Production function in Bangalore factory. My responsibilities include leading a team of more than 1100 employees, 30 managers & ensuring productivity of an asset base in excess of Rs 1500 crores. I take pride in the realisation from various benchmarking studies that my team delivers performance that is truly world class.

In a short span of 7 years in ITC, I have traversed the leadership pipeline graduating through the roles of Individual Contributor, Manager and Manager's Manager to my current role of a Functional Manager. My journey at ITC has been fast paced and exciting and what's even better is that I feel that the best still to come!

Karan thoughts on ITC as a Workplace:
Whilst the diversity of the people I've come across in ITC never ceases to amaze me, I sense a commonality between them at a fundamental level. I've found that the people in ITC not only possess tremendous amount of experiential & theoretical knowledge but also display deep humility & integrity. I haven't come across any "Masters of Universe" in ITC! A unique blend of collegial atmosphere & healthy competition at the workplace resonates with my own set of values & has always energised me. I've always found encouragement from my teams to try out my ideas, support during my failures & insights during the moments of introspection. I appreciate the fact that the workplace at ITC provides me with a broad canvas that allows me to work on wide ranging areas such as Six Sigma & Lean, employee engagement, complex negotiations with unions, campus connect, technology induction, innovation & managerial development process. Finally and most importantly, at the workplace I've built relationships that go beyond work & I truly feel that I am part of a large family - that of ITCians.

Rahul believes ITC offers you:
ITC's biggest value proposition for me is the opportunity from my first year here to discover & mould the leader in me. ITC has offered me myriad leadership opportunities & the space to experiment and learn from my mistakes. Whilst reading about the subject has helped me crystallise my thoughts, it is the actual experience of leading diverse teams to successfully achieve audacious goals that has truly helped me develop my leadership style. The second thing I value a lot about ITC is the opportunity it offers me to take up complex business problems, conceptualise broad solution frameworks & then actually implement solutions with my team. The experience of starting off with an ambiguous but critical business problem & finally witnessing the power of implemented solutions gives me a tremendous high! Finally, the realisation that my efforts are helping build a world-class Indian enterprise provides a deep & meaningful purpose to my professional endeavours.

Karan Chanana - knowthis.com Brands Advantage

Advantages of Brands

A strong brand offers many advantages for marketers including:
  • Brands provide multiple sensory stimuli to enhance customer recognition. For example, a brand can be visually recognizable from its packaging, logo, shape, etc. It can also be recognizable via sound, such as hearing the name on a radio advertisement or talking with someone who mentions the product.
  • Customers who are frequent and enthusiastic purchasers of a particular brand are likely to become Brand Loyal. Cultivating brand loyalty among customers is the ultimate reward for successful marketers since these customers are far less likely to be enticed to switch to other brands compared to non-loyal customers.
  • Well-developed and promoted brands make product positioning efforts more effective. The result is that upon exposure to a brand (e.g., hearing it, seeing it) customers conjure up mental images or feelings of the benefits they receive from using that brand. The reverse is even better. When customers associate benefits with a particular brand, the brand may have attained a significant competitive advantage. In these situations the customer who recognizes he needs a solution to a problem (e.g., needs to bleach clothes) may automatically think of one brand that offers the solution to the problem (e.g., Clorox). This “benefit = brand” association provides a significant advantage for the brand that the customer associates with the benefit sought.
  • Firms that establish a successful brand can extend the brand by adding new products under the same “family” brand. Such branding may allow companies to introduce new products more easily since the brand is already recognized within the market.
  • Strong brands can lead to financial advantages through the concept of Brand Equity in which the brand itself becomes valuable. Such gains can be realized through the out-right sale of a brand or through licensing arrangements. For example, Company A may have a well-recognized brand (Brand X) within a market but for some reason they are looking to concentrate their efforts in other markets. Company B is looking to enter the same market as Brand X. If circumstances are right Company A could sell to Company B the rights to use the Brand X name without selling any other part of the company. That is, Company A simply sells the legal rights to the Brand X name but retains all other parts of Brand X, such as the production facilities and employees. In cases of well developed brands such a transaction may carry a very large price tag. Thus, through strong branding efforts Company A achieves a large financial gain by simply signing over the rights to the name. But why would Company B seek to purchase a brand for such a high price tag? Because by buying the brand Company B has already achieved an important marketing goal – building awareness within the target market. The fact the market is already be familiar with the brand allows the Company B to concentrate on other marketing decisions.
We provide more detail on branding in the Managing Productstutorial with a special emphasis on the strategies marketers follow in order to build a strong brand.

Karan Chanana - dharma-production

The Dharma Production Group

These are what make up our celluloid dreams at Dharma Productions. Enrapturing audiences all around the world, our films have raked in success for the company and its associates.

Established by Late Shri Yash Johar in 1976, Dharma Productions endeavor has always been to produce high quality cinema that is accepted and appreciated by audiences across the world. Soon after its inception, Dharma Productions became a buzzword for stellar productions such as 'Dostana', 'Duniya', 'Muqaddar Ka Faisla', 'Agneepath' and 'Gumrah'.

Dharma's reputation as a clean, honest company grew with each of these films and helped build a tremendous amount of goodwill within the fraternity and outside of it.

What followed next was cinematic history from Dharma Productions.

1998 saw the release of Dharma Production's Kuch Kuch Hota Hai ('Heartbeats'), the directorial debut of Karan Johar that featured the most loved on-screen couple of contemporary Indian cinema, Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol. This massive production turned into a huge box office blockbuster and became the first Indian feature film to figure in the UK Top 10 (Empire, December 1998).

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai not only broke box-office records but also accumulated a number of National and International awards. Hailed for its superlative performances and excellent craftsmanship Kuch Kuch Hota Hai is acclaimed for its unparalleled standards in presentation, styling and production mounting till this date. Its landmark recognition has been the Indian National Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment.

All of these landmark achievements set up a huge expectancy and anticipation for the next movie from Dharma Productions, and Karan Johar did not fail to deliver. 2001 saw the release of Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, ('Laughter and Sadness'), which was scripted and directed by Karan and featured a line-up of Indian megastars across generations. This movie lit up the silver screen with its casting coup of industry stalwarts Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan, contemporary megastars Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, and current heartthrobs Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor.

Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham represented everything that was ever expected of a Dharma Productions movie in terms of its grandeur, exquisiteness, and touching storyline and it won millions of hearts across the world. The movie established new box-office benchmarks, featured in both the US and UK Top Ten Listings, and went on to win awards at a host of National and International Film Festivals.

Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham made its debut at No. 3 on the UK chart (behind Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings) and was on the Top Ten Films in UK for 4 consecutive weeks in a row. Besides being invited at various International Film Festivals across the Globe, it has also been listed in the Top 20 Asian Films by admission in Europe in the Cannes Film Festival 2002. In fact Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham is the first Indian film to have a mainstream release in the territories of Germany, France and Poland. It was very well received with Five Awards including the Best Actress Awards for Kajol at the Valenciennes International Film Festival, France.

With a clear vision of how he wanted to nurture Dharma Productions, Karan Johar embarked on producing films with independent directors under his banner. The first step towards this goal was Kal Ho Naa Ho a film produced by Dharma Productions, written by Karan Johar and directed by his long time associate and assistant Nikhil Advani.

Kal Ho Naa Ho, besides starring old favourites like Jaya Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan, also had Preity Zinta and Saif Ali Khan. Besides being hugely successful in the domestic market, this film also became a top grosser in UK and USA. Kal Ho Naa Ho also screened at the International Film Festival - Faces of love, MOSCOW and International Filmfestival Berlinale, BERLIN.

The Screenplay of 'Kal Ho Naa Ho' has found a place in the Oscar Archives at the Library of Motion Pictures, Arts and Science, an academy where scripts are collected and preserved mainly for the use for research by actors, students, film-makers and writers who are regular patrons of the library.

Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (Never Say Goodbye), the third directorial venture from Karan Johar dealt with the mature and bold theme of infidelity and was received with a tremendous response internationally. Apart from being a commercial success, the film raised a lot of debate in the country on the changing views on marriage in India. The varied opinions on the film's point of view only added to the company's profile as a production house unafraid to raise issues that are less discussed.

Released in August 2006, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (Never Say Goodbye) has grossed a record-breaking sale of US $ 30 million worldwide. It holds the distinction of having the biggest opening worldwide ever in the history of Indian Cinema and has gone on to become the highest grossing Indian film in the Overseas Market to date.
Around this time, Karan also embarked on a journey to actively nurture young directors. To give them a voice and to make their kind of cinema...cinema for the young, by the young. His protégés went on to create a world within a world...with beautiful stories told.

Dostana (Friendship), Tarun Mansukhani's directorial debut, was released worldwide in November 2008. Rated as one of the finest comedies of the year, Dostana continued Dharma Productions' endeavor to push the envelope thematically. The film initiated debates all over India about homosexuality and attained pop-culture status for the subject - a mammoth task in a country where homosexuality is still not legally recognized. By the use of humor, Dostana helped homosexuality enter the drawing rooms and board room discussions in India. Dostana was a commercial success as well, raking in over US $ 20 million worldwide.
Oct 2, 2010 saw the release of Wake up Sid. Helmed by debutant Ayan Mukherjee, this film saw both critical and commercial acclaim. Shot entirely in Mumbai, the film starred today's youth icon, Ranbir Kapoor in the leading role. A coming of age film, Wake Up Sid takes a look at young India's aspirations and their sense of purpose. The film won many laurels in the awards circuit including the best debut award (direction) for Ayan Mukherjee at the Film fare awards in 2009.

November 2009 was marked by another release Kurbaan. Rensil D'Silva's directorial debut had Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor in leading roles. The film talks about the times we live in and an individual's take on terrorism. Once again, Dharma Productions looks at a new theme, albeit controversial, taking story telling and pushing the envelope to newer heights.

My Name is Khan, Karan Johar's fourth directorial venture and a mammoth production starring Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, released on February 12, 2010. Set against the backdrop of the aftermath of 9/11, the film deals with racial stereotyping suffered by Asians in America and one man's quest to spread the message of tolerance and love. The film opened to a thunderous response not only in India but all over the world. It premiered at the Berlin Film festival, a first for an Indian film, where the film was received with a standing ovation from audiences all over the world. My Name is Khan has gone down in history as the most successful Indian film in the international markets raking in well over 209 cr INR. My Name is Khan is also the only Indian film to have widest mainstream release in the international markets thus establishing the unparallel goodwill and appreciation among the audiences all over the world. It opened newer markets for an Indian film like France, Poland, Puerto Rico, Spain, Lebanon, Syria, Egypt, Russia, China, Taiwan, South Korea to name a few. The film also became the first Indian feature to be released in a phased manner in certain part of the world.

With its fingers firmly entrenched on the pulse of the audience, Dharma released yet another enchanting love story in July of 2010. I Hate Luv Storys marked the debut of Punit Malhotra. Starring Imran Khan and Sonam Kapoor, the film was major success across all markets. I Hate Luv Storys is a young, bubbly film which takes a look at the life of Jay (Imran) and his hatred towards sloppy, predictable love stories and how soon enough his life begins to resemble like one when he falls in love with Simran (Sonam Kapoor). Set amidst the Indian film industry, this film takes pot shots at several industry big wigs and looks at various clichés that mark the industry. The film generated tremendous amount of business making it a certified box office success.

We are Family released with much fanfare and anticipation. An official remake of the acclaimed Hollywood film "Stepmom", through this Dharma achieved a coup of sorts by bringing together two of the biggest powerhouse performers of the Indian film industry, Kajol & Kareena Kapoor. In keeping with Dharma's tradition of nurturing new talent, this film also marked the directorial debut of Siddharth Malhotra. With power packed performances, emotional and heartfelt moment and superb production values, We are Family was very well received by audiences in India and abroad. It brought back the old world charm of movies which could be viewed by the entire family together.

Moving forward Dharma Productions will continue its journey of bringing enjoyable, path breaking cinema which will be appreciated by both the masses and classes. Under the leadership of Karan Johar, Dharma is committed to nurturing and giving a voice to new talent across all spectrums of film making.

Upcoming projects include another debut director Shakun Batra's Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu film starring Imran Khan and Kareena Kapoor. Also coming up is the remake of the classic Agneepath directed by Karan Malhotra starring Hrithik Roshan, Priyanka Chopra, Rishi Kapoor & Sanjay Dutt.

This year we will also see Karan bringing back the era of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai with his next film "Student of the Year" launching three newcomers Varun Dhawan (son of David Dhawan), Alia Bhatt (daughter of Mahesh Bhatt) and Siddharth Malhotra which will be co-produced by Shah Rukh Khan's Red Chillies Entertainment. SOTY will be a happy song and dance film with the tone and syntax being that of a holiday outing. Still from emotional energy perspective, it will be a super cool young flick.

Many miles to go before I sleep....is not merely a statement but an adage that we at Dharma Productions live by. Lots of stories to be told...lots of hidden talent to be discovered...and lots of movies to be made.

Residents Portal.

Karan Heritage is one of the popular Residential Developments in Devkar Panand neighborhood of Kolhapur. It is among the well known Projects of its class. The landscape is beautiful with spacious Houses.

Karan Johar

As a child, Karan Johar always dreamt of being famous. His father, Yash Johar was a top filmmaker, so Karan grew up amidst the company of Amit uncle and Jaya aunty, who were close friends of his parents. Like most star children, he too went for Hrithik and Abhishek’s birthday parties where he met up with other kids, many of whom have grown up to become famous stars today. Kareena and Karisma Kapoor, Twinkle and Rinke Khanna, Aditya and Uday Chopra, Abhishek and Shweta Bachchan, Goldie and Shrishti Behl, Hrithik and Sunaina Roshan, Tusshar and Ektaa Kapoor were few of his childhood friends but they all drifted apart as childhood soon turned to adolescence. When Karan was schooling at Green Lawns, he used to be a complete movie buff. However, having lived and studied in South Mumbai all along, he hardly had any filmi friends. He wasn’t very proud when people came up to him and asked him if he was Yash Johar’s son. At that time and in that side of the city, being associated with films wasn’t something to be thrilled about. So he often denied any connection with the movies, insisting that his father was not a producer, but a businessman. But within, Karan was an ardent Hindi movie buff, who would rush home after school to catch his favourite movie on video. He had his own collection of the latest Hindi films and saw Yash Chopra’s Silsila every single day. He loved trial shows and would often burst into tears when his parents refused to take him for preview screenings. As Karan grew up, he realized that his love for cinema kept growing too, and when he was studying at H R College, he got friendly with Aditya Chopra, Yash Chopra’s son. One day, Aditya called up Karan, wanting to narrate his gem of a story idea he had. That film was "Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge". The next two months saw Karan working along with Aditya on the scripting of the film, till one day Adi asked him to assist him on the film. Karan, who had just finished his French course and was all set, to go get a degree in Mass Communications from Paris. But his passion for the movies made him change his mind and the rest is history. While working on "Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge", during the Switzerland schedule of the film, one day Shah Rukh suggested to Karan to direct his own film. That was how his debut "Kuch Kuch Hota Hain" was born. The film ended up, as one of the biggest blockbusters of all time and Karan was a superstar director before he realized it. For a teenager who grew up on the works of Raj Kapoor and Yash Chopra, he was now a successful filmmaker himself. After that, Karan took a break for a year as good friend Adi was making "Mohabbatein". “Both Adi and me have decided that we will make films alternately. So, when he makes a film, I will be there with him at every stage and vice-versa”, he said of his impressive decision. After Mohabbatein released, Karan announced his next venture, "Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Ghum", which was the biggest multi-star cast film made to date. Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan, Shahrukh Khan with Kajol and Hrithik Roshan cast along Kareena Kapoor made Kabhi Khusi Kabhi Ghum the hottest movie of the decade. Since then Lady Luck has been exceedingly sweet to him. He has his own chat show as well. As they say some people have all the luck!
